Rosalie elastic waist cropped pants

Free PDF sewing pattern: Rosalie elastic waist cropped pants

Dear friends,

I just decided that I will share all of the patterns on my blog for FREE from now on. I am on the way to edit all blog posts and present all download links directly in the post so that any sewing enthusiast can have access to the patterns made by me. Making patterns is still my biggest love, and I will continue to design and make and share with all of you. I have a big dream of turning Tiana’s Closet into a place where you can return for more ideas and free patterns!

Today I am sharing the newest pattern that I made recently: the Rosalie elastic waist cropped pants.

Rosalie elastic waist cropped pants

This is one of my favorite style – pants that are so comfortable and good looking at the same time! It features tapered legs (and you know, carrot legged pants are trendy this year – before the COVID-19 pandemic). Of course, when you stay and work from home, this style is so much better than the ones with zippers and non-elastic waistband.

This pair of pants is also really easy to sew, too. Even a total newbie can sew these pants without much trouble.

The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check the Printing Guide.

You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern.

Cutting instruction:

After taping down all the pages following the instruction, the overall layout of the pattern pieces is like this:

The pattern pieces are to be cut as follows:

A. Front – 2pcs

B. Back – 2pcs

C. Pocket Facing – 2pcs

D. Pocket Back – 2pcs

E. Waistband – 1pc

Sewing instruction:

Step 1: Print out the pattern, cut and tape to get all the pattern pieces ready.

Step 2: Place the fabric flat on the floor or table (you may need to pre-wash your fabric to prevent shrinking). Place the pattern pieces on top of the fabric, pin and cut out the fabric.

Step 3: Serge or run zic zag stitch along the edges of the fabric to prevent fraying (for some type of fabric like jersey knit, you don’t need to serge).

Step 4: Place the left pocket facing piece and the left front piece right sides facing, sew along the curve. Flip the pocket facing piece over to the wrong side of the main front piece, sew a flat felled seam on the pocket facing (so that the pocket facing will not turn outward).

Step 5: Place the pocket back piece and the pocket facing piece right side facing, sew along the curved edge. Sew a line 0.5cm (1/4in) at the top of the pocket to secure the front waist.

Repeat step 4 and 5 with the right side of the front pants.

Step 6: Place left front piece and left back piece right side facing, sew along the side seam and the inseam. Repeat with the right side of the pants.

Step 7: Turn one leg inside out, push it into the other leg, pin the crotch line and sew the left and right sides of the pants together.

Step 8: Place two short ends of the waistband together right side facing and sew. Fold the waistband in half (the sewn end inside). Pin the waistband to the main pants. Sew the waistband, leaving a small opening to insert elastic.

Step 9: Insert elastic. Sew two ends of the elastic together and close the opening. You can sew one or two parallel lines on the elastic to prevent it from twisting inside the elastic casing.

There you are, the Rosalie elastic waistband cropped pants. Mix it with simple T-shirt for comfort days inside, or put on a jacket for an effortless stylish outfit! You have many ways to mix your Rosalie pants and create your own unique style.

  1. Thank you so much for the pattern! It came at the right time for me! I’ve been looking for a relaxed fit pants pattern. So generous of you to share all these great patterns free for amateur sewists like me! Thank you so much!
Just a few questions about this pants pattern,
    1. Can I use woven fabric for this pattern ? I’ve a medium weight handloom cotton fabric with me, which I plan to use.
    2. How much ease will be there in the finished pants? My waist size is an L ( near to XL) and Hips M. So I’m a little confused as to which size to make.
    Hope you’ll clear my doubts,
Can’t wait to make the pants….
    thanks again

    1. Hello, these pants can be made with woven fabric. If you want it to be more comfortable, choose one size bigger than yours. Because these are elastic waist pants, don’t worry about your waist measurement, just choose the size based on your hip measurement. As said, you can choose size L for your project.
      Happy sewing!

  2. Hi Tiana, thanks for all the free patterns on your blog. 🙏 Have you made these Rosalie pants yourself? Or has anyone else? It would be lovely to see some pictures of finished garments to get an idea of how they will look in reality. Printing out the pattern, cutting it, putting it together, buying fabric, cutting the fabric, and then sewing it is a long and arduous process to try for any pattern (free or not) as you can understand. Seeing pictures of at least 1 finished garment will give one the confidence to take this long journey. 😀

  3. I’m excited to purchase fabric for this pattern. I’m just unsure about the amount of fabric to purchase. These look so comfy. Thank you for the pattern. Very generous of you

  4. I just found this pattern and it looks perfect for my abilities and for our new ‘lifestyle’. I still struggle knowing which fabrics are correct for a pattern. Any tips would be helpful!
