The Zander Oversize Shirt is a relaxed men’s button-up designed with an easy, contemporary silhouette that works equally well as a classic casual shirt, overshirt, or lightweight jacket. With its dropped shoulders, roomy fit and practical chest pockets, Zander has a modern workwear-inspired look that is easy to style throughout the year.

Make it in a lighter shirting fabric for an everyday button-up, choose a more substantial cotton or linen for a casual overshirt, or use a medium-weight fabric to create an easy transitional layer for spring and autumn. Wear it buttoned on its own or open over a T-shirt with jeans for a relaxed streetwear look.

Design Features

  • Oversized, relaxed fit with generous ease through the chest and body
  • Dropped shoulders for a casual contemporary silhouette
  • Classic shirt collar with separate collar stand
  • Full center-front button closure
  • Two large patch pockets with pocket flaps at the chest
  • Long, roomy sleeves with classic shirt cuffs and button closure
  • Sleeve opening and cuff construction for a traditional shirt finish
  • Back yoke
  • Small shaping details below the back yoke
  • Gently curved shirt-tail hem
  • Longer, relaxed proportions suitable for layering

The simple silhouette gives plenty of room for movement while the collar, cuffs, pockets and yoke add enough structure to keep the finished garment polished.

One Pattern, Different Looks

The choice of fabric can completely change the character of Zander.

In a lightweight cotton, linen or chambray, it becomes an easy everyday shirt. In cotton twill, canvas, heavier linen or corduroy, it works beautifully as a shirt jacket or overshirt worn open over a T-shirt or sweatshirt.

This makes Zander particularly useful for transitional weather, when you want an extra layer without the weight or construction of a fully lined jacket.

Suggested Fabrics

This pattern is designed for woven fabrics without stretch or with minimal stretch.

For a lighter shirt, consider cotton shirting, poplin, Oxford cloth, chambray, linen, linen/cotton blends or lightweight twill.

For an overshirt or lightweight jacket, try medium-weight cotton twill, cotton canvas, brushed cotton, heavier linen, lightweight denim, corduroy, wool blends or other medium-weight woven fabrics with enough body to hold the oversized silhouette.

For your first version, a stable medium-weight cotton or cotton-linen fabric is particularly easy to sew and press.

Sewing Skill Level: Intermediate / adventurous confident beginner

Zander uses standard shirt-making techniques including a collar and collar stand, front button placket, patch pockets with flaps, back yoke, sleeves and buttoned cuffs.

A confident beginner who has already sewn a few woven garments can use this pattern as an introduction to traditional shirt construction. More experienced sewists can easily adapt the pattern into different shirt and overshirt variations.

Size Range: Men’s XXS–5XL

The pattern is intentionally drafted with an oversized fit and dropped shoulder, so please refer to the included body and finished-garment measurement charts when choosing your size.

If you prefer a less oversized appearance, you may wish to compare the finished garment measurements with a shirt you already own before selecting your size.

Style It Your Way

Keep Zander clean and minimalist in solid linen or cotton, give it a utility feel in canvas or twill, make a classic denim overshirt, or experiment with checks, stripes and textured fabrics.

Paired with a simple T-shirt and jeans, it creates an effortless casual layer that can move easily between everyday wear, workwear-inspired styling and relaxed streetwear.
