The Noemi dress is a modest, elegant dress inspired by vintage fashion. This midi dress comes with small ruffle at neckline and large ruffle at skirt and puffed sleeves. I love how it is suitable for transitional time like spring and fall, great for wearing solo layering up.
As usual, my pattern is made in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL so you may find a suitable size for yourself. If you are not sure which size suits you, take a look at the measurement table before doing anything here: SIZE GUIDE.
The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size you need! My patterns are now made in both A4/Letter paper and A0 paper format so you can print at home or at any print shop! I also included a projector file for those who are more tech savvy and have a projector at home!
For home printers, you can print this using your home printer and either A4 or Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink and waste of paper, save the earth!
Some PC may print smaller than actual size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to size, if not, scale up a bit. I was informed by a reader that you can also print the pdf as image to get the right scale, however I never tested it on my computer.
SEWING INSTRUCTION
You will need:
- Fabric of your choice. This pattern is intended for WOVEN fabric.
- Invisible zipper, zipper length about 60cm and can be trim off if needed.
- Scissors, pencil or fabric marker, ruler, pins
- Sewing machine/Serger or needle and thread
- Printed pattern
How much fabric do you need for this piece of garment? To be precise, you may need to check how much fabric you need before buying. It will depend on the selected pattern size, the width, and design of the fabric you plan to use. Just to be sure, print all the paper patterns and lay them out at the width of fabric you plan to use (usually from 90 to 150 centimeters or 35 to 60 inches). Measure how much fabric you will need. Don’t forget to account for pieces that need to be cut multiple times and pieces that are cut on the fold.
CUTTING INSTRUCTION
If you are using a projector, you will see pattern pieces as follows:
All my patterns already include 1cm (3/8in) seam allowance. Just cut the pattern pieces as is and use a 1cm seam allowance when you sew. The center back seam is 2cm (3/4″) to accommodate the invisible zipper.
The fabric will be cut into following pieces:
- Front Bodice: cut 1 piece on the fold
- Back Bodice: cut 2 mirrored pieces
- Front Skirt: cut 1 piece on the fold
- Back Skirt: cut 2 mirrored pieces
- Sleeve: cut 2 mirrored pieces
- Sleeve Cuff: cut 2 pieces from main fabric + 2 pieces from lightweight fusible interfacing (optional)
- Neck Ruffle: cut 1 piece
- Skirt Ruffle: cut 2 pieces on the fold
Place the pattern pieces on the fabric, pin the pattern pieces to the fabric to secure them in place. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut out the fabric pieces along the outer lines of the pattern. Take your time to ensure precise and clean cuts, as this will affect the fit and overall appearance of your garment.
Make sure to mark all notches and other design features such as darts, pleats, draw marks etc. from the pattern pieces onto your fabric. When sewing the garment, pay attention to notches, they must match up.
SEWING INSTRUCTION
1. Serge/zigzag stitch the raw edges of fabric pieces
2. Sew the darts on Front and Back Bodice

3. Gather skirt and skirt ruffle pieces

– Gather Skirt Ruffle to match lower edge (wider curve) of Front and Back Skirt
– Gather upper edge of Front Skirt to match lower edge of Front Bodice, and Back Skirt to match Back Bodice
4. Attach Front Skirt to Front Bodice and Back Skirt to Back Bodice
– Place Front Skirt and Front Bodice right sides together, matching the waist seam. Distribute gathers evenly along the waist seam and pin to secure. Sew to attach.
– Repeat with the Back Skirt and Back Bodice pieces.
5. Sew the main garment
– Place Front Dress and one Back Dress right sides together, matching the shoulder and side seams. Pin and sew to attach.
– Repeat with the other Back Dress piece to get the main garment.
6. Attach invisible zipper to center back and finish the center back seam

7. Attach Skirt Ruffle to Skirt
– Place two Skirt Ruffle pieces right sides together, match and sew the short edges to create a loop.
– Pin the Skirt Ruffle to the skirt, right sides together. Match the side seams, distribute gathers evenly along the seam. Sew to attach.
8. Sew and attach the Sleeve

– Gather the sleeve bottom to match the horizontal edge of the Sleeve Cuff.
– Fold two sides of Sleeve right sides together, sew the sleeve seam.
– Fold two short ends of the Sleeve Cuff right sides together and sew to create a tube. Press seam allowance to the sides.
– Fold the tube in half lengthwise, hiding seam allowance inside the fold.
– Pin the Sleeve Cuff to the Sleeve opening and sew to attach.
– Gather the cap of Sleeve (from the notch on the front armscye to the notch on the back armscye, across the notch on the cap) to match the measurement from the notch on front armhole to the notch on the back armhole across the shoulder seam.
– Turn the Sleeve right side out, put it into the main garment. Match the armhole seam and all notches along the seam. Pin and sew to attach.
9. Sew neck ruffle
– Fold Neck Ruffle in half lengthwise, right sides facing and sew two short edges. Turn fabric right side out and press. You get a folded long strip with finished short ends.
– Gather the raw edges of the Neck Ruffle to match the neckline measurement of the garment.
– Staystitch at 0.5cm (1/4”) along the neckline of main garment.
– Pin Neck Ruffle to right side of neckline. Distribute gathers evenly along neckline.
– Stitch using a 1cm (3/8”) seam allowance to attach Neck Ruffle to main garment. Neaten neckline seam using serger/zigzag stitch. Press and topstitch seam allowance to the main garment at 0.5cm (1/4”) from the neckline seam.
10. Finish dress hem using narrow rolled hem
