This pattern is pretty much unisex, so you can make it for either boy or girl. I know you can easily grab a pack of 3 or 4 tank tops in Costco or Walmart, but it is fun to make by yourself – in less than 30 minutes!

This tank top can go with the kid’s elastic waist pants that I have shared not long ago. Link to the pant pattern can be found here.

This pattern is made mostly based on kid’s
height – with recommended age group for each size, but I suggest you choose the
size based on your kid’s height. For example, if your 7 year old kid is 130cm/51in
tall, choose size 130 instead of size 120 (which is suggested for 6-7 year old
group).

The pattern is made using layered PDF,
please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your
paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and
printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size
you need! If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for
the instruction here.

You can print this using your home
printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be
able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always
print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing
at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink
and waste of paper, save the earth!

Some PC may print smaller than actual
size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but
my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the
right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to
size, if not, scale up a bit.

HOW TO SEW THE BASIC TANK TO FOR KIDS

This tank top is extremely easy and quick
to sew – but you will need to work with stretch/knit fabric, so be careful to
choose a fabric that your home sewing machine can handle.

You will need

Fabric of your
choice

Scissors, pencil or
fabric marker, ruler, pins

Sewing machine or
needle and thread

What fabric can be used for this project?
I recommend using stretch jersey – it is soft, comfortable and great for
summer! Opt for those with fun prints for a nice day in the sun!

How much fabric do you need for this piece
of garment? Just a small piece (less than 1 yard) of fabric is enough.

Cutting instruction:

After printing out and taping all the
pattern pages together, you will get something similar to this image:

You will see that there are 2 sets of
lines on each pattern size. The inner lines are sewing line (and you sew along
these lines), and the outer lines are cutting lines (you cut the fabric along
these lines, remember the folding lines where you have to fold the fabric
before cutting). The distance between sewing line and cutting line is seam
allowance, and it varies from point to point. For example, the side seam
allowance is about 1/2 inch (1.2cm), and seam allowance at hemline is 1 inch
(2.5cm). This is the reason why I do not remove the sewing lines from the
pattern. Please use it as a guide to know how much seam allowance you need to
give at each seam.

Fabric will be cut into following pieces:

Front: cut 1 on
fold

Back: cut 1 on fold

Armhole binding:
cut 2

Neckline binding:
cut 1

As this pattern use knit (stretch)
fabric, the binding strips are not cut on bias but cut across grainline. Please
follow the grainline arrow when cutting out the binding strips. The binding is
just an estimate length, you will need to adjust accordingly to the
stretchiness of your fabric. The more stretchy the fabric, the shorter the
strip, so you will need to test your fabric before cutting it.

Sewing instruction:

1. Place Front and Back right side
facing. Sew the shoulder seams and the side seams.

2. Attach binding to the neckline.

3. Attach binding to the armholes.

4. Hem the tank top.

So easy you see? You already got the tank
top in maybe less than 30 minutes!

And here is the download link:

KID’S BASIC TANK TOP (SIZE 90-150)

Happy sewing!
