As I am taking a break from all the bad news about COVID-19, I realize that I become more effective – creating lots of new patterns with the hope that it will soon get better so that I can wear my new dresses outside.
The Tanya ruffled sleeve tunic dress is the result of a creative day when I realize I have become too chubby to fit in my older fit and flare dresses. That must be the COVID-19 to blame! Making people stay at home idling around with nothing much to do except eating and sleeping (I do not have much motivation to keep working out inside the house).
This dress is loose fitting, falls below the knee and has ruffled sleeves. I believe the sleeves add some statement to the classic silhouette – which is quite common seen in any wardrobe. And what’s more? It has inseam pockets so that you can push almost anything into it – your phone, handkerchief, or even some snack!
Match this dress with a straw hat, flat sandals, and you are ready for a nice day in the sun, by the beach, or in the sunny garden (like me!)
I have played around with the 3D simulation of this dress, so that you will have a direct visualization of the dress when put up on your body. Do you think that this is a nice dress to make?

Just like always, the Tanya tunic dress is made with 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL, meaning it can fit both the slim and the chubby, and I believe it will look good on any one!
Cutting instruction:
After taping down all the pages, the pattern will look like this (I chose size 4XL as sample).
The pattern pieces are cut as follows:
- Back – cut 1 on fold
- Front – cut 1 on fold
- Sleeve cap – cut 2
- Sleeve main – cut 2
- Pocket – cut 4
- Front facing – cut 1 main fabric + 1 fusible interfacing
- Back facing – cut 1 main fabric + 1 fusible interfacing
How to sew the Tanya tunic dress
Step 1: Print out, cut and tape the pattern pieces.
Step 2: Lay the fabric flat on the floor or table (you may need to pre-wash and iron the fabric to prevent shrinking, especially for fabric like linen). Place pattern pieces on top according to instruction. Pin and cut out the pieces. Serge or run a zig zag stitch along the edges of the fabric to prevent fraying if needed.
Step 3: Iron the fusible interfacing on front facing and back facing pieces.
Step 4: Sew two parallel lines along the top of the main sleeve piece, pull thread to gather fabric until it matches the bottom line of the sleeve cap piece. Place main sleeve piece and sleeve cap piece right sides facing. Pin and sew the main sleeve piece and the sleeve cap piece. Repeat with the other sleeve.
Step 5: Place pocket piece and front piece right side facing, pin and sew to attach the pocket piece to the front piece. Turn and sew a flat felled seam on the pocket piece. Repeat with the other side. For the back piece, do not sew the flat felled seam on the pocket piece.
Step 6: Place front and back pieces right sides facing, the pocket pieces turned outward and facing each other. Pin and sew shoulder seams and side seams. Sew the side seam from shoulder down to the pocket, sew around the pocket piece and continue sewing to the hemline.
Step 7: Place front facing and back facing pieces right side facing. Pin and sew shoulder seams.
Step 8: Place the joined facing piece with the main dress, match the notches, pin and sew the facing to the main dress. Turn the fabric inside, sew a flat felled seam on the facing piece.
Step 9: Turn the sleeve right side out, push it into the armhole of the main dress. Pin and sew the sleeve to the main dress. Repeat with the other side.
Step 10: Hem the sleeves and the bottom of the dress. Attach a button at the back of the neckline (or use a ribbon for a feminine finish).
Voilà! You have made your new dress. Such an easy project, isn’t it?

there is no mention of the tear drop on the back of the bodice. i am perplexed on how to get both the neck and the tear drop hemmed at the same time.
Dear Cherri, normally the neckline and the tear drop are not hemmed. They are sewn with facing. Just place the facing and the bodice right side facing and sew along the curves, turn your needle at the points, then clip the seam at the curves, turn the facing in and iron. You can also sew a flat felled hem around the neckline (stitch as close as possible to the point between the neckline and the tear drop) and top stitch the tear drop.
