Sandra asymmetrical hem blouse - free PDF sewing pattern

Summer is ending soon, and with this COVID-19 pandemic always stalking around, I do not have much interest in going out shopping at all. But of course I still want to make myself something nice to wear for a walk in the park every afternoon, so my choice is to make some simple pieces of clothing from the fabric that I already have in my possession. The Sandra asymmetrical hem blouse is the result of a weekend morning – and I am so happy I washed it and wore it right in the afternoon!

I am sharing the pattern made for this lovely yet simple blouse for you, and hope you enjoy making it!

The Sandra asymmetrical blouse features a loose fitting, a gathered high and low peplum and round neck detail. It is easy to be paired with pencil skirt, shorts or jeans (almost any kind of bottom can go with it, just try!).

Below are just some examples of the Sandra asymmetrical hem blouse in 3D simulation. Please note that a 3D simulation is 95% similar to reality. You can rest assured that the garment will come out almost the same as the 3D images. I have been using this kind of pattern making software for years and it saves me lots of time and effort. No muslin – no try and true, just adjust directly on the virtual model, and you will get the almost perfect pattern!

This is the Sandra blouse on a virtual model (her name is Eva), paired with a pencil skirt:

And here’s the front:

Here’s the side view of the blouse. Notice how the hem is slightly dipped, huh?

Do you think that this lovely darling is worth a try? Pick up your scissors and start cutting!

The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your desired size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. I have included a first page with many details about sizing and printing, so please first read the first page and make sure you know what size you need! If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the instruction here.

You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern – avoid waste of ink and waste of paper, save the earth!

Some PC may print smaller than actual size even when you choose 100% scale – I don’t know why this problem exist, but my HP laptop cannot print true to size. I have to scale up to 103% to get the right size. You may need to check with your PC to see if it prints true to size, if not, scale up a bit.

Cutting instruction:

After taping down all the pages following the instruction, the overall layout of the pattern pieces is like this:

The pattern pieces are to be cut as follows:

A. Front – cut 1 on fold

B. Back – cut 1 on fold

C. Front Ruffle – cut 1 on fold

D. Back Ruffle – cut 1 on fold

E. Neckline Binding – cut 1 on bias

F. Armhole Binding – cut 2 on bias

Sewing instruction:

Although many experienced sewers do not need a sewing instruction, I find that many newbies do, not because they do not know how to sew a straight line or insert a zipper, but because they do not know which step comes first, so I just add here simple guidance of the sewing steps:

1. Prepare your fabric. For some types of fabric that shrink, first wash and iron your fabric to make sure it will not come out smaller than your size after one wash!

2. Cut out all the pieces according to cutting instruction.

3. Pin and sew the bust darts of the Front piece.

4. Serge all the pieces (if needed). You can always serge later after sewing the seams.

5. Gather the Front Ruffle piece so that it matches the Front piece. Pin the Front piece and the gathered Front Ruffle piece right side facing, pin and sew the joined front piece.

6. Gather the Back Ruffle piece and sew it to the Back piece to get the joined back piece.

7. Place the joined Front and Back pieces right side facing. Pin and sew the shoulder seam and side seam.

8. Attach bias tape to neckline and armholes.

9. Hem the blouse.

And there it is, a beautiful Sandra asymmetrical hem blouse! It is a really quick and easy project and can give you room for creativeness. Sew it, and send me photos of your finished projects. I look forward to seeing your masterpieces.

  1. I really appreciate all your time and efforts to make free pdf patterns available to us. With the cost of fabric and notions, a free pdf pattern is always most welcome. With some clever hacking, the top pattern can be lengthened to make a simple shift dress as well…
